Fingerprinting children is not easy. Fingerprints are not fully developed till around age 8 or 9, thus we recommend the handprint or footprint charms which are fun and easy to obtain.
Any washable ink pad in a dark color (black, blue, or red) works best to capture a clear, useable print. The ink pad pictured below is one we use in our store that always works great.

This is a very good product that you can buy at most craft stores for less than $5 that creates a very clear image, and washes off quickly!
Make sure you look for a 'washable' stamp pad or you'll find out the hard way why washable is better than permanent.
